A novel use
Let's put this functionality of this journal to some good use, that is, if you don't mind.

I have two issues that I would like some opinions on - if things go well it could very likely enhance the quality of my life: won't that make you feel good?

1 - Eating Healthily and Economically.

Financial situations lately are amazingly difficult. I hate the student loan system. That aside, I'm trying to cut costs as much as possible. I simply can't afford to buy lunch at work anymore. So, I'm trying to think of foods that are 1.) relatively cheap 2.) good for me 3.) can be bought in bulk and stored for a reasonable amount of time without going bad and 4.) taste good (that would help).

As it is, I am spending like 5 bucks a meal, and that's no good. I know I can identify some key foods that fit these criteria, but I would like to know what everyone else thinks. Variety is the spice of life, right? If this was your situation, what would you buy the most of? Oh, lunch or dinner, mind you.

2 - Enhancing life through sound

Music is one of my favorite things. There is never a time where I am home and music is not playing. I wish I had more time to search around and delve deeper into music, but I just don't have the capacity to download, listen, decide, repeat. I would like you to tell me what your favorite three albums are, and maybe even why. This is something people like to do anyway, right?

Thanks!

You fool, carrots stick alone will not simply suffice for a meal!

Is this Mike? I think it is. If it is, please get a phone again. Or at least go online. I have no idea what you do with your life anymore, and that bothers me.

I WILL eMule that CD though. Thanks.

What I like to do for a healthy and economical lunch is make rice and beans in mass quantities. I buy a bag of brown rice ($2-3), a couple of cans of black beans ($3), and a small can of corn (50 Cent). I cook the rice, mix the beans and corn in, then spice it up with some salt, chili spices, and a dash of paprika. This makes a lot, which feeds me for lunch for about 3 or 4 days. Sometimes I make some chicken and mix it in for a meal or two.

It's quite economical and easy to heat up in the microwave at work. Not to mention it's healthy and of course, everyone loves beans beans the musical fruit.

I like that idea! Though, I would definitely need to add the meat though. And I would most likely buy nutrient enriched rice - I mean, if you're gonna eat tons of rice, you may as well eat the good shit, right?

Added to my grocery list, much obliged!

1.) Yeah, good call on the rice Amanda. Rice and pasta. I mean, you saw what me and Asa had all the time. It was always insanely cheap and pretty good.

2.) Eh, it's tough to choose a top 3 like that. As each month goes on my tastes delve deeper and deeper and a look at my cd collection will assure anyone that my tastes have become more and more eccentric. I found a solid shoutcast that I listen to while at work. But, I assume streaming media is banned @ GE. I can make reccomendations based on what you're looking for/feeling like. I mean saying recommend me some good music is tough for me because I can reccomend anything from hip hop, to dark ambient, to funk, to metal/funk, to progressive, to jam, to jazz/funk, to world music, to complex rock, to downbeat etc.

I can't do it! But alas, this allows me to go on a rant to pass time. These aren't my fav's I guess, but these few rule for different reasons.

Les Claypools Fearless Flying Frog Brigade- Live Set 1: INSANE bass, great jamming, doesn't have the metal edge of Primus, much more jammin.

Bootsys Rubber Band- Live in Louisville '78: It's impossible to have more space bass than what is on this cd. The space bass sounds like a jackhammer on steroids breathing fire out its neck. It's so scary, it killed the first two rows of people, and Bootsy didn't wear a shirt during this performance. Every second is ultra high tempo, fast, and intense. It also killed my old cpu speakers.

Frank Zappa- You Can't Do That On Stage Volume 1: After a band member talks about puking on stage, it then starts with a great story about a fat floating sofa and the good Lord, before it goes into a whole song in the german language. He has the audience do live poetry readings. He's ultra sarcastic about so much stuff. For example, he makes fun of every punk/teen band by writing the perfect punk/teen song lyrics and all. He also goes on MTV makes fun of how dumb its viewers are, bashes all things religion to no end then recommends suicide as a solution. He basically slaps everything in the face with pure sarcastic glory. Besides the fact that Frank Zappa is known as rock and roll's most brilliant musical mind, he wrote everything he ever did in sheet music, and created some of the most challenging music ever. Also the only guy to join the rock and roll hall of fame, jazz hall of fame, and composers hall of fame. This album shows diversity across all spectrums of Zappa.

GZA/Genius- Liquid Swords: Probably the darkest, rawest hip hop album there is. There's kung fu all over this. Lyrics about, flying guillotines, poison darts, ninjas, spiked floors, throwing knives, dungeons, drug deals, duels, chess, blood, swords. This is the definition of grimy. You probably won't realize how insane the lyrics are until multiple listens, like any classic hip hop album.

Good stuff!

My only question is, if Bootsies live CD has that much splank, I wonder what it would'v been like if it was studio recorded.

Those CD's will enter my eMule queue when I get home. Thanks.

You've got to eat a lot of pasta, it's cheap and it's really good for you (Sam's club cells organic whole wheat spaghetti = win). Also, meats keep really well when you just freeze them, so I buy a lot of salmon and cut it up into freezer bags, then I freeze those freezer bags and pull one out in the morning. By the time lunch rolls around I can go ahead and pop it on the grill, and have me some grilled salmon.

Also a good idea is frozen vegetables, they are very cheap and actually better for you than fresh ones (Flash frozen, so the nutrients stay in rather than degrade on a shelf), I just take some mixed veggies and sautee them in about a tablespoon or so of olive oil, because olive oil is the man. I even wrote an article about olive oil.

I actually heard that frozen vegetables are shit compared to fresh ones. Is there a difference between frozen and flash frozen and, if so, does flash frozen include some kind of unethical technology?

Pasta is chock full of carbs though. I would only eat it routinely if my workout was routine. Unfortunately, it isn't anymore.

My idea now is to cook in bulk.

Many people wonder if frozen and canned vegetables are as nutritious as fresh vegetables. The answer to this question depends on both the time between the harvesting of the vegetable and the canning and freezing process. Generally, vegetables are canned or frozen immediately upon harvest when their nutrient content is at its peak.

The way vegetables are prepared at home can also affect the nutrient content. Vegetables of any type (fresh, frozen, or canned) that are boiled in large amounts of water for long periods of time lose much of their nutritional content compared to vegetables that are lightly steamed.

To be more specific, therefore, vegetables that are fresh from the farm or just picked are more nutritious than their frozen or canned counterparts. However, frozen and canned vegetables are an acceptable nutritional alternative. Just be careful of the amount of salt added to canned vegetables; try to buy those without added salt. And, don't overcook any vegetables.

As for not eating Carbs, I don't reccomend it, you should a lot of carbs, the way I think I diet should be structured : 70% carbs, 20% protein, 10% fats, occasinally I switch to 15 protein and 15 fat (recently however, things have been getting really hectic so I have probably not eaten as well as I'd like to.)

As for excercising, wake up a half hour earlier and just do a quick set of burpees, v-ups, and neck bridges. It's a good way to keep healthy. I might also reccomend you look into "Power Yoga". It's not a wussy yoga tape that is just stretching and breathing, nope, this is hard core yoga, seriously, my buddy Matt Pedro is a professional MMA fighter and he got WIPED OUT by power yoga before the first half of the session was even over. It's fun and challenging, but I get more angry than relaxed when using it.

Cooking in Bulk ROCKS
You got a fridge?
You got tupperware?
You got a weekend?

Well, then you got meals for a week.

I actually just finished this amazing e-book about Power Factor Training and Static Contraction Training. Basically, I learned a lot about why I haven't been gaining any muscle over the past many years and how I can keep my workouts at high intensity. I'm probly gonna post about it tomorrow to let people know, cause it's so awesome. I even made a spreadsheet, fuckin roxorz.
